Koreans Looking Towards Smart Subscriptions
Korean startups focused on subscription services have been popping up across Korea. The so-called subscription-based e-commerce businesses model (“subcom” for short) send their customers a box full of products on a regular basis in exchange for a monthly membership fee. Several new subcoms have launched in Korea to offer subscribers many ways to get their daily essentials without having to worry about where to go or what to buy. Until recently, popular subcoms have been focused on cosmetics or accessories. That is all changing now with services that offer a wide array of items from shirts to pet food to toys for children.

Nearly ubiquitous in Korea, KakaoTalk has transformed into a full mobile platform that supports a whole ecosystem of apps. According to VentureBeat, developers in Asia such as Kakao Inc. “are advancing the mobile space in unique ways.” Kakao Inc.’s push beyond messaging has opened doors for many other companies and app developers who latch onto Kakao’s platform and its success.
