Korea is Leading the World’s Smart TV market | Smart TV changes the world
Nowadays, the world leads smart life ever since smartphone was introduced, and we can do all our work by a smartphone. The number of smartphone users is almost over several millions, and will people be satisfied as it is? In the TV market, TV that is beyond the existing TV has come out, and that is Smart TV. Korean Smart TV has the highest percentage in the market share of the global market, and let’s take a look at the world of Smart TV.
The reason why Smart TV became necessary
When we take a look at back the times for what we did with TV, we didn’t really have anything to do with it other than watching the TV contents, though the size of the display grew bigger and bigger. There was no means to really make use of the size of the big display, other than just watching something on it. In this perspective, I think other angle of looking at TV is required besides thinking that it exists only for watching the broadcasting contents, right? So this is exactly the essence of Smart TV.

Samsung Smart TV
Smart TV existed before under the name of Internet TV. But at that time, the public did not go for Internet TV. But still, the thinking about the combination of internet and TV has been continued, and now, the possible market for the consumers to accept the combination seems to be formed. Many appliance businesses are developing Smart TV strategically and preparing to introduce them. In other words, as TV and web combined, TV can have various facet s to itself. Of course, much thanks to smartphone, the public is now very familiar with this concept, and this recognition is pushing Smart TV forward. With the good economic power, a family owns at least two TVs, and the important thing is that one of them is in the living room.
Living room is the only place where all the family members gather together, and TV is at the center of this space. If you think about this, then TV has been in more important position at home than any other appliances. So it’d be pretty meaningful to utilize TV with various applications, connected to web, other than just watching the broadcasts. Once the stupid box has become smart with various stories, and also the environment to change the patterns of using TV is now getting provided.
Smart TV with various uses
When thinking of Smart TV, first thing that the public comes up with is installing various applications to TV like smartphones. With smartphones, now the public has much understanding of applications, and so they think of the environment where they can install applications and use them with Smart TV. Like this, Smart TV is all about installing various applications and using them just like smartphone with its connection to web. It’s growing out of its original purpose— just watching. Especially, the important point here is how fitting those applications are. It’s not simply just about applying successful applications of smartphone to TV, but also about family-suitable applications because this TV will be in the living room.

Smart TV that is leading the paradigm of TV
Smart TV has the operation system of smartphone built inside, so it can be connected through the internet IP and use various applications. It is indeed ‘Smart TV’— home TV, TV’s function and smartphone function all in one. Besides watching the broadcasted contents, it can be connected to internet contents such as YouTube, weather, news and also used for movie streaming service. Also, games can be downloaded from the app store and be enjoyed. Of course, there are Facebook and Twitter for real time. One can enjoy various contents such as games and movies without additional set-top box and monthly payment, but only with connecting the LAN. This is the difference from the existing IP TV.
There are also various contents for kids. The best examples of this are “The celebrated paintings for kids (Samsung Electronics)” that has paintings like Gogh’s “Sunflowers,” and Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” and “Color study (LG Electronics),” which is the coloring game. Through TV, various environments can be brought in one place at the same time— not just watching the broadcasted contents— so it brings the change in the patterns of life as well. In the end, due to Smart TV, we will accept this changed role of TV in our lives, just like we once accepted the existing TV and its contents in the past. It’s as if smartphone became an important factor of our lives though we did not know how much it would change our lives.
The rosy outlook of Smart TV
The size of the Korean Smart TV market will grow from this year’s 540 thousands to next year’s 1.31 million. ( Related Link : Korea to lead Smart TV market ) The market investigating companies predict that about 10 million TVs will be supplied, taking up the 33.3% of the amount of shipment to the world. In other words, the world of Smart TV will be opened. Apple focused on maximizing the ability to play back the contents with the strategy, “TV as TV should be.” The point of Google TV is opening the browser, searching the desired contents and using it with the motto, “TV like computer.” Samsung Electronics is affiliated with Yahoo, and LG Electronics is preparing its independent app store, maximizing the capability to produce. Smart TV is the key point of the TV market. In the future, Smart TV will be the important part of the TV market, and additionally, it’s the field that Google or Apple can hand over to LG Electronics or Samsung Electronics.

The world’s largest exhibition for appliances, the “CES 2011” was opened at the Las Vegas Convention center in the USA on January, 6th for four days. The hot issue of “CES 2011″ was the ‘smart’ competition, led by Smart TV. Samsung Electronics , which conquered the world’s digital market and is leading the Smart TV market, introduced the Smart TV with the 75 inch mega-large screen and various applications built in. LG Electronics introduced Smart TV that uses its own platform. Smartphone and tablet PC can be connected to this Smart TV and share various contents with Smart TV . The ‘smart’ competition of the electronic business that has been started in 2011 is joined by the new products from the global IT, Electronic companies such as Google, Intel, Apple, Sony and Panasonic. For a while, due to the hot technology competition between LG, Korea is leading the world’s smart market.
If we can have various experiences through Smart TV, like the one we can have with smartphone such as the benefits from the mobile life, we will have benefits from it. For example, we can record HD image of our family with the camera on TV, edit it and watch it together with the family. Or we won’t have to sit in front of computer anymore to get the information we want. If there comes more means of utilizing the position of TV, we will be able to experience more in the smart environment. And this is not happening in the distant future, but right now. One of the Smart TV’s roles is convenience for human.
What if Smart TV goes public, and there is a Smart TV in the living room? The customs of life is changing. Especially, when you have the holiday with the family, you see a Smart TV in the living room? Don’t you think it’d be pretty different? Samsung and LG are competing to lower the price of Smart TV, and it is heating up the competition. Why don’t we experience a bit smarter world through the world of Smart TV?
