Leading to an era of DIY interior design: Eco-friendly Paint, Natural Paint
Growing awareness of how homes influence health – Leading to an era of DIY interior design
For some time now, people have been living amidst countless toxic substances emitted from composite materials in their environment, but now they are trying to create a safe and pleasant environment at home by doing their own interior decorating and design. As a result, the demand for eco-friendly and natural paints is on the rise.
Let’s take a look at eco-friendly and natural paints that have become popular in Korea recently.
First, what is the difference between eco-friendly paint and natural paint?
Eco-friendly paint, like most paint, is made from chemicals which are toxic. However, each country has their own standard regarding acceptable levels of toxic emissions from paint, and when the amount emitted falls under that standard, it is considered eco-friendly. So, although they do contain some toxic substances, eco-friendly paints are paints that fall under the limit imposed by each country.
Natural paint is made from natural ingredients and does not contain the harmful toxins found in other paints. Therefore, natural paint is considered to be much safer than eco-friendly paint. Even though it is mainly made from natural ingredients, natural paint is not actually 100% natural. It does contain some chemicals to prevent defects such as discoloration and cracking.

In Korea, “eco-friendliness” is a huge trend these days. The number of eco-conscious consumers who personally renovate their home interiors and use eco-friendly or natural paints is increasing.
We will now look at eco-friendly and natural paints, created for DIY home decorators, which have recently been featured in the Korean media.
1. Eco-friendly Paints
KCC has received a certificate of commendation from the Korean Minister of Environment for two consecutive years, and they were the first paint manufacturer to receive the green industry certificate. In June 2013, KCC released Pro Stain Gold, an eco-friendly paint with wood-protection that allows wood to maintain its grain pattern and texture. It also has a high permeability and coloring effect. Adhering to Korea’s Clean Air Conservation Act, this eco-friendly paint satisfies the VOC (volatile organic compounds) content standard of 400g/L maximum for oil wood stains. Its highly water repellent quality suppresses the outbreak of fungi or germs. As a breathable paint that does not form a thick surface coating, Pro Stain Gold allows the release of water vapor from the wood to prevent decay. Not only that, but it blocks UV rays which also prevents discoloration and decay of the wood. It is in these ways that it maintains the grain pattern and texture of wood.
<KCC Eco-Friendly Paint “Supeuro”>
Supeuro (meaning ‘to the forest’ in Korean), made by KCC, was also released in 2012 and became popular around the world. It is a product well suited to health conscious consumers. Even if you are not a painting expert, Supeuro is so easy to use and comes in such a wide variety of colors that many people choose it for their homes. In addition, the “easy-cleaning” feature of the paint, made possible by applying cutting-edge nanotechnology, allows any kind of children’s doodling on the wall to be easily washed off.
Samhwa Paint is another company that is stepping up in the race to create an image as an eco-friendly paint company. In 2013, Samhwa Paint was granted the Eczema and Allergy Certificate from the Korea Asthma and Allergy Foundation, as well as the Asthma Allergy Foundation of America, for its eco-friendly paints called i-Saenggak (thinking about kids) and The Classy.

Samhwa Paint explained that this is the first time for a Korean-made paint to receive such a certificate, which certifies that the paint does not trigger allergies or cause Sick Building Syndrome, both of which are linked with exposure to VOC’s or other toxic substances. These products are expected to become popular for decorating classrooms in kindergartens and schools.
2. Natural Paint
In this section, we would like to introduce to you products from small and medium-sized Korean companies that produce natural paints.
The first product we would like to tell you about is Fragrance of the Forest, a naturally scented paint produced by Hankook Shinhwa Paint.
<Fragrance of the Forest>
Fragrance of the Forest does not contain any kind of toxic substances, as it is made with natural minerals and plant materials. It is a natural anion paint that blocks harmful substances usually emitted from concrete flooring and walls, like formaldehyde and VOCs, preventing Sick Building Syndrome.
In addition, Fragrance of the Forest is a healthy paint that has deodorizing and anti-fungal effects, which also helps to prevent Sick Building Syndrome when used in the home.
Secondly, DongYang E&P’s Natural Power is another great product. Using sericite as its main ingredient, Natural Power is an eco-friendly paint that protects residential environments from harmful substances through its ionic reaction with indoor pollutants.
Sericite reacts with water vapor in the air and creates oxygen through a chemical reaction of oxide ions with cations. Natural Power has also been patented in Japan.
Now that we’ve taken a look at Korean-made eco-friendly and natural paints and why they are essential for residential interior use, we hope that you, our dear readers, take some time during a weekend or a vacation to use these healthy paints for your home decorating projects.
