beLAUNCH 2013 Gets Jessica Alba and Phil Libin on the Same Podium

beLAUNCH, which bills itself as “Korea’s biggest startup and technology conference,” has just added a speaker to its roster who is sure to draw a crowd.

Actress, turned entrepreneur Jessica Alba will be promoting The Honest Company, which she co-founded with Brian Lee. Their company sells a line of eco-friendly, non-toxic products for infants and children through e-commerce.

Products like these make sense for the Korean market, where moms are notoriously picky about how they feed, clothe and, yes, even moisturize their kids. That said, I think that beLAUNCH is pushihing Alba as a major speaker primarily because of her name recognition. That’s not a criticism – it sounds like a winning strategy to me.

I do hope, however, that her presence at the conference doesn’t overshadow speeches by some of Korea’s startup and tech legends including:

Other speakers of interest will include TechInAsia founder Willis Wee, GREE director John S. Kim, the other David Lee, 500 Startups partner Christine Tsai and, perhaps the most famous speaker after the lovely Ms. Alba, Evernote founder and CEO Phil Libin. (No word yet on if the other, other David Lee will be at the event.)

beLAUNCH 2013 runs May 1 and 2 at COEX in Gangnam. You can buy tickets on the beLAUNCH website and prices shoot up like Korea’s Naro 1 Rocket as we get closer to the day of the event, so register soon.

Aside from the speakers, events also include a startup battle, startup booths and a hackaton.

I’ve been a tech enthusiast for nearly my entire life and I exported myself from the US to the tech-savvy city of Seoul in 2005. Since then I’ve worked with a number of Korea’s technology companies, large and small, helping them promote their products and brands around the world.
